The newly completed Pillsbury Creative Commons (PCC) marks a major milestone in the transformation of Chicago Avenue in South Minneapolis. Completed in summer 2025, this project represents the first phase of a multi-phase, $35 million redevelopment that expands the long-standing home of Pillsbury House + Theatre, an organization with over 30 years of community-based arts and economic development.
With Element serving as owner’s representative, Director of Development, Kristen Murray, guided the project team from feasibility to grand opening—helping to navigate complex funding, design, and construction coordination. Designed in collaboration with Gensler and built by Flannery Construction, the new two-story building embodies transparency, connection, and inclusivity—offering flexible spaces for creativity, technical training, and local storytelling. The facility features KRSM 98.9 FM’s radio studios, designed for high-quality acoustics and street-level engagement, alongside flexible gathering areas for performances, workshops, and community programs. Two artist live-work units on the second floor provide a home for multidisciplinary creators, while a green roof and upper deck promote sustainability and reflection.
Adjacent to the main building, a former auto garage has been repurposed into a Scene Shop for Pillsbury House + Theatre’s Technical Arts Training Program, offering hands-on experience in set design and fabrication. Phase 2, focused on enhancing and expanding the neighboring Scene Shop, is slated to begin in Fall 2025.
Pillsbury Creative Commons is more than a building—it’s a hub for creativity, connection, and community empowerment. Element is honored to continue supporting this transformative project, ensuring that each phase advances the mission of building equity through art, culture, and opportunity.
